Locked in syndrome – chickens, butterflies and Ken’s story

This is a bit of a smörgåsbord of stuff.

Essentially, I was asked to do a lecture for some A-level students, thinking of embarking on a career in medicine.

I was really struggling for what to talk about until one of my medical students mentioned a video I had shown on a patient, called Ken, who was “locked in” for several months. His story if scary and uplifting in equal measure and made me reflect a lot on my clinical practice.

I’ve expanded the topic a little in include a very special chicken and one of the greatest books ever written on the subject of life and illness – The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

I hope you enjoy it.
